Aphonopelma bicoloratum (Mexican Blood-leg) Tarantula
Aphonopelma bicoloratum, commonly known as the Mexican Bloodleg Tarantula, is a stunning terrestrial species native to the arid scrublands and thorn forests of Guerrero and Michoacán, Mexico. This species is prized for its brilliant coloration—deep orange-red legs contrasting beautifully with a jet-black carapace and abdomen—making it one of the most visually striking Aphonopelma species. Unlike many desert tarantulas, A. bicoloratum inhabits semi-arid environments with distinct wet and dry seasons, constructing deep burrows that maintain stable humidity and temperature. It is a slow-growing, long-lived species, with females known to live 20 years or more. Calm, deliberate, and highly tolerant of observation, this tarantula spends much of its time at or near the entrance of its burrow, occasionally sealing it during molting or dry periods. In captivity, it thrives with moderate substrate depth, good ventilation, and a seasonal moisture gradient—an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate beauty, longevity, and calm temperament.
