Acanthoscurria geniculata (Brazilian White-knee) Tarantula
Acanthoscurria geniculata, commonly known as the Brazilian Whiteknee Tarantula, is a large, terrestrial species native to the tropical rainforests of northern Brazil. One of the most iconic New World tarantulas, it is instantly recognizable by its bold black body contrasted with vivid white banding across the leg joints. This impressive species combines a commanding presence with strong feeding behavior and is a favorite among display keepers for its size, activity, and appetite. In the wild, A. geniculata inhabits humid forest floors rich in leaf litter and decaying wood, constructing shallow burrows or taking shelter under roots and logs. It is primarily nocturnal, emerging at dusk to ambush prey across the forest substrate. Though not considered aggressive, it is known for its defensive postures and occasional use of urticating hairs when threatened. In captivity, A. geniculata thrives in horizontally oriented enclosures with deep, slightly moist substrate, stable warmth, and moderate humidity, often becoming a visible and engaging centerpiece species.
