Poecilotheria metallica (Gooty Sapphire Ornamental) Tarantula

Poecilotheria metallica, known as the Gooty Sapphire Ornamental Tarantula, is a breathtaking arboreal species endemic to a small, fragmented forest region in southern India. Revered for its iridescent cobalt-blue coloration accented by yellow and white leg banding, this species represents one of the most visually striking spiders in existence. In the wild, P. metallica inhabits decaying tree hollows in high-canopy dry deciduous forests, where it relies on camouflage, speed, and complex silken retreats for protection. It is primarily nocturnal and displays a shy yet defensive temperament when disturbed. Despite its beauty, P. metallica is critically endangered due to habitat loss and a restricted distribution range of less than 100 km² near the town of Gooty, Andhra Pradesh. In captivity, it thrives in well-ventilated arboreal enclosures that mimic its warm, moderately humid native climate.
