Vitalius chromatus (Brazilian Red & White) Tarantula

Vitalius chromatus, commonly known as the Brazilian Red and White Tarantula, is a large, terrestrial species native to the subtropical Atlantic forests and savanna margins of southern Brazil and Paraguay. Striking in appearance, this tarantula displays jet-black legs contrasted by bright white bands and deep crimson abdominal setae—an unmistakable color combination that has made it one of the most admired New World terrestrials in the hobby. In its native range, V. chromatus inhabits humid forest floors and open grassland edges, constructing burrows under logs, roots, or natural debris where moisture levels remain stable year-round. It is a bold and highly visible species, often remaining at the entrance of its retreat. Though capable of defensive postures and urticating hair use, it is generally more display-oriented than aggressive. In captivity, it thrives in moderately humid enclosures with deep substrate, stable warmth, and good cross-ventilation, making it a striking and manageable showpiece for intermediate keepers.
