Avicularia sp. "Braunshauseni" (Goliath Pinktoe) Tarantula
Avicularia sp. ‘Braunshauseni’, often referred to as the Goliath Pinktoe Tarantula, is among the largest and most impressive members of the Avicularia genus. Native to the humid tropical forests of northern Brazil and southern Guyana, this species is distinguished by its massive size, velvety black and bronze coloration, and striking pink toe pads that glow under light. As adults, females can exceed 7 inches in leg span, with dense, plush setae giving them a regal, almost mammalian appearance. In its native habitat, A. sp. ‘Braunshauseni’ inhabits the mid-to-upper canopy, creating large tubular silk retreats between vines, palm fronds, and epiphytes where it remains well-ventilated yet shielded from heavy equatorial rains. Despite its size and speed, this species is noted for its calm demeanor and tendency to rely on retreating behavior rather than threat displays, making it an excellent showpiece for large arboreal enclosures that replicate the vertical depth and humidity of its rainforest home.
