Citharacanthus cyaneus (Cuban Dwarf Violet) Tarantula
Citharacanthus cyaneus, known as the Cuban Blue Tarantula, is a rare and exceptionally beautiful species endemic to Cuba’s dry tropical forests and coastal scrublands. This medium-sized terrestrial tarantula is instantly recognizable for its metallic cobalt-blue legs, iridescent carapace, and contrasting golden abdominal setae—one of the most vibrant natural colorations found in New World species. In the wild, C. cyaneus inhabits shallow burrows in compact, calcareous soils beneath stones, roots, and leaf litter, emerging primarily at night to ambush prey. The species endures alternating wet and dry seasons, relying on its burrow microclimate to regulate temperature and humidity. Though reclusive, it displays impressive bursts of speed and will defend its retreat when threatened. In captivity, it thrives in semi-arid setups with deep substrate, strong ventilation, and moderate humidity, rewarding keepers with a vivid display species that combines color, rarity, and fascinating behavior.
