Pamphobeteus sp. 'Mascara' (Mascara Giant Bird-eater) Tarantula
Pamphobeteus sp. “Mascara” is a striking, large-bodied terrestrial tarantula from the humid tropical forests of Ecuador and Colombia, celebrated for its bold contrast patterning and rapid growth. This undescribed species earns its nickname from the dramatic dark markings surrounding the eyes and carapace—resembling natural “mascara.” Adult females exhibit deep charcoal-black coloration with iridescent violet highlights along the femurs and carapace, while males mature into stunning shades of magenta and bronze. Like other Pamphobeteus, this species grows quickly, feeds aggressively, and attains impressive size and mass. In the wild, P. sp. “Mascara” inhabits shaded forest floors rich in leaf litter and decaying wood, constructing silk-lined retreats or using natural cavities for shelter. It is a bold yet reclusive ambush predator, relying on speed and sensitivity to vibration to capture prey. In captivity, it thrives with deep, slightly moist substrate, stable warmth, and good airflow—ideal for experienced keepers seeking a showpiece species with both power and color.
