Theraphosa blondi (Goliath Bird-eater) Tarantula
Theraphosa blondi, known as the Goliath Birdeater, is the world’s largest tarantula by mass and one of the most awe-inspiring arachnids ever discovered. Native to the deep rainforests of northern South America, particularly the Guiana Shield region of Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, and northern Brazil, this colossal species can reach a leg span exceeding 11 inches and weigh over 175 grams. Its dense chocolate-brown to chestnut coloration and thick, velvety setae give it an imposing, prehistoric appearance. In the wild, T. blondi occupies deep, silk-lined burrows on the saturated forest floor near rivers and swamp margins, where temperatures and humidity remain consistently high. A powerful ambush predator, it preys on large insects, small reptiles, and amphibians — occasionally even small vertebrates. Though defensive and equipped with highly irritating urticating hairs, this species displays remarkable natural behaviors when provided with proper environmental depth and humidity. In captivity, it thrives in deep, moist substrate with high ventilation and constant humidity, replicating the humid, oxygen-rich air of its jungle home.
