Tliltocatl (Brachypelma) sabulosus (Guatemalan Red-rump) Tarantula
Tliltocatl sabulosus, commonly known as the Guatemalan Red Rump Tarantula, is a large, striking terrestrial species native to the tropical forests and highland valleys of Guatemala and southern Mexico. This species features a glossy black body accented by dense, ruby-red setae across the abdomen, giving it a deep, burnished appearance under natural light. Closely related to T. vagans, T. sabulosus can be distinguished by its larger size, slightly longer leg span, and more vivid crimson abdominal setae. In the wild, it inhabits tropical deciduous forests and grassy slopes, constructing silk-lined burrows in firm, compacted soil beneath rocks or roots. These retreats provide stable humidity throughout the dry season, allowing the tarantula to remain active year-round. T. sabulosus is generally calm but will readily use urticating hairs if disturbed. In captivity, it thrives under semi-arid conditions with deep substrate, moderate humidity, and stable warmth, making it a robust and long-lived display species for both new and experienced keepers.
