Nhandu coloratovillosus (Brazilian Black & White) 4 - 5" SUBADULT / ADULT FEMALE
Nhandu coloratovillosus, commonly known as the Brazilian Black and White Birdeater, is a large, bold, and visually striking terrestrial tarantula native to the subtropical Atlantic forests and grasslands of southeastern Brazil. This impressive species features stark black-and-white banding along the legs, a reddish-brown abdomen covered in dense setae, and a lighter golden-brown carapace—creating one of the most dramatic contrasts among New World terrestrials. In the wild, N. coloratovillosus inhabits the forest floor and open savanna margins, where it constructs silk-lined burrows or takes refuge beneath logs and stones. It is a confident, highly visible species known for its strong feeding response and occasional defensive displays, though it rarely bites. Fast-growing and hardy, it adapts well to captivity, thriving in enclosures with deep, slightly moist substrate, good airflow, and warm, stable conditions. This tarantula’s striking coloration, size, and bold personality make it a favorite centerpiece for intermediate and advanced keepers.
