Tapinauchenius plumipes (Mahogany Tree Spider) Tarantula
Tapinauchenius plumipes, known as the Trinidad Violet Tarantula, is a fast, sleek arboreal species native to the humid tropical forests of Trinidad and parts of northern Venezuela. It is admired for its velvety deep violet and bronze iridescence, which shimmers subtly under ambient or LED lighting. Unlike many arboreals, T. plumipes has a streamlined build with long, graceful legs and minimal abdominal patterning, emphasizing its elegant simplicity. In the wild, this species occupies tree cavities, palm crowns, and dense vine tangles, constructing silk-lined retreats that it uses both as shelter and as a launching point for ambush hunting. It is a quick, flighty tarantula that relies on speed rather than threat displays for defense. In captivity, T. plumipes adapts best to tall, well-ventilated enclosures with vertical bark slabs or cork tubes, moderate humidity, and consistent warmth. Its iridescence and fluid movements make it one of the most mesmerizing display species among New World arboreals.
