Bumba horrida (Brazilian Red-head)
Bumba horrida, commonly known as the Brazilian Red-Head Tarantula, is a hardy, medium-sized terrestrial species found throughout the tropical forests and savannas of northern Brazil and parts of the Amazon Basin. This striking tarantula is easily recognized by its dark, velvety body contrasted by a reddish-orange carapace and lighter setae on the legs and abdomen. Despite its intimidating name, B. horrida is generally calm and deliberate in behavior, relying on stillness and camouflage rather than aggression. In its natural habitat, it inhabits shallow burrows or natural ground cavities lined with silk, often under leaf litter or fallen logs. The region’s alternating wet and dry seasons have shaped it into a resilient species capable of adapting to varying humidity levels. In captivity, B. horrida thrives with moderately moist substrate, good ventilation, and stable warmth, making it an excellent choice for both display and breeding collections.
