Avicularia rufa is a brilliantly colored arboreal tarantula native to the central and western regions of the Amazon Basin. Sometimes called the Amazon Red-Rumped Pinktoe, this species is instantly recognizable by its emerald-green carapace, metallic blue legs, and the rich reddish setae that cover its abdomen. Juveniles start out with bronze and copper hues that gradually transition into the deep, reflective reds and greens characteristic of adults. In nature, A. rufa is most often found living several meters above ground in hollow vines, bromeliad clusters, and crevices of tree bark, where it constructs tubular silk retreats to protect itself from predators and heavy tropical rains. Known for its calm disposition, elegant movement, and vivid coloration, A. rufa is a highly sought-after display species that embodies the vibrancy of the Amazon canopy.
