Psalmopoeus irminia, widely known as the Venezuelan Sun Tiger Tarantula, is a striking and athletic arboreal species native to the humid forests of Venezuela, Guyana, and northern Brazil. One of the most vividly marked members of the Psalmopoeus genus, P. irminia displays jet-black coloration contrasted by radiant orange and peach striping on the legs and abdomen, creating a dramatic, tiger-like appearance. In the wild, this species resides in hollow trees and under loose bark near forest edges and stream corridors, where it constructs tubular retreats reinforced with dense silk. It is a powerful ambush predator and one of the most visually dynamic arboreal tarantulas to observe in motion. P. irminia is fast, alert, and defensive when startled, preferring retreat over confrontation but capable of sudden bursts of speed. When kept in captivity, it flourishes in tall, well-ventilated enclosures with vertical cork bark, moderate humidity, and shaded retreats that replicate the layered understory of its native habitat.
