Lasiodorides polycuspulatus (Peruvian Blonde Bird-eater) Tarantula
Lasiodorides polycuspulatus is a large, visually striking terrestrial tarantula native to the montane rainforests of Peru and Ecuador. A close relative of Lasiodorides striatus, this species is known for its robust size, elegant leg striping, and subtle golden-bronze sheen across the carapace and femurs. Adult females exhibit deep chocolate to mahogany tones with faint violet iridescence, while males mature into lighter bronzed hues. In its native environment, L. polycuspulatus inhabits the humid forest floors of the Andean foothills, often constructing silk-lined burrows beneath rocks, roots, or decomposing logs in moist, shaded soils. Despite its size, it is generally calm and reclusive, preferring retreat to confrontation when disturbed. In captivity, this species thrives in deep, slightly moist substrate with consistent humidity, stable warmth, and moderate airflow—well suited for intermediate to advanced keepers who appreciate understated beauty and natural behavior over flashiness.
