Adult females are massive and jet-black with a subtle blue iridescence, while males mature into a shimmering violet-blue with bronze reflections—one of the most dramatic sexual dimorphisms among New World giants. In the wild, P. antinous inhabits humid forest floors rich in decaying vegetation, constructing burrows beneath roots and fallen logs where the soil stays moist and cool. It is a bold, fast-growing species with a powerful feeding response and excellent visibility, making it a favorite among advanced keepers.
