Pamphobeteus sp. 'Manganegra' (Manganegra Giant Bird-eater)
Pamphobeteus sp. “Manganegra,” often referred to as the Black Manganese Birdeater, is a breathtaking and highly sought-after species from the tropical lowland rainforests of Ecuador. This undescribed Pamphobeteus species is named for its deep, metallic blue-black sheen—reminiscent of oxidized manganese—and its immense size and bulk. Adult females display dense, velvety black coloration with subtle violet and gunmetal reflections under light, while mature males often show magenta and bronze iridescence following their ultimate molt. In the wild, P. sp. “Manganegra” inhabits the humid forest floor, establishing silk-lined retreats beneath logs, roots, or in shallow soil burrows where moisture and temperature remain stable year-round. Like other members of the genus, it is a fast-growing, voracious feeder with strong prey response and impressive display behavior. In captivity, it thrives with deep, moist substrate, high humidity, and good airflow, rewarding dedicated keepers with one of the most visually striking New World tarantulas known to science.
