Sericopelma rubronitens (Panama Red-rump)
Sericopelma rubronitens, known as the Panamanian Redleg Tarantula, is a large, robust terrestrial species native to the humid lowland and foothill rainforests of Panama and Costa Rica. It is admired for its deep mahogany to black body contrasted by rich red-orange setae along the femurs and patellae, giving it a powerful, earthy elegance. This species is a classic representative of Central American rainforest tarantulas—slow-growing, long-lived, and well adapted to warm, humid environments. In the wild, S. rubronitens constructs deep silk-lined burrows beneath logs, roots, and forest debris, where it remains hidden during the day to avoid predation and maintain stable moisture levels. It is primarily nocturnal, emerging at dusk to ambush ground-dwelling insects and other small prey. In captivity, S. rubronitens thrives in moderately humid enclosures with deep substrate, stable warmth, and good airflow, rewarding keepers with both visibility and calm temperament once acclimated. Its size, hardiness, and coloration make it a prized display species for intermediate to advanced enthusiasts.
