Theraphosa stirmi "Burgundy" (Goliath Bird-eater) Tarantula
Theraphosa stirmi, known as the Burgundy Goliath Birdeater, is one of the largest tarantula species on Earth, native to the lush tropical rainforests of Guyana, Suriname, and northern Brazil. It is a massive, terrestrial giant renowned for its impressive leg span, dense bristling setae, and rich burgundy coloration that deepens with each molt. The species’ sheer size, combined with its metallic sheen and heavy body, makes it a centerpiece specimen in any advanced collection. In the wild, T. stirmi inhabits deep burrows in the damp forest floor near riverbanks and swampy lowlands, where humidity is consistently high and temperatures remain warm throughout the year. Nocturnal and powerfully built, this tarantula ambushes prey such as insects, small vertebrates, and amphibians using strength and speed. Though often defensive and equipped with potent urticating hairs, it is a hardy and rewarding species when kept with proper care. In captivity, T. stirmi thrives in deep, humid substrate with consistent moisture and high airflow, mimicking the saturated conditions of its native rainforest habitat.
