In the wild, T. kahlenbergi inhabits compact, loamy soils where it constructs silk-lined burrows under rocks and root systems. These retreats maintain humidity during the long Central American dry season and provide refuge from surface heat. It is primarily nocturnal, deliberate in movement, and generally tolerant of mild disturbance—though it may use urticating hairs defensively.
