Pamphobeteus sp. 'Tigris' (Ecuadorian Black Bird-eater) Tarantula
Pamphobeteus sp. “Tigris” is a spectacular and rarely encountered terrestrial tarantula from the tropical rainforests of Ecuador and Colombia, belonging to one of the most visually stunning genera of South American giants. This undescribed species is distinguished by its powerful build, intense metallic coloration, and subtle tiger-like striping along the femurs and abdomen. Adults display deep violet and bronze hues under light, while juveniles often exhibit contrasting salmon and black patterns that evolve dramatically with each molt. In its natural habitat, P. sp. “Tigris” occupies humid forest floors, creating shallow burrows or taking refuge beneath fallen logs and root systems where moisture remains constant year-round. It is an alert and robust species with a strong feeding response, yet typically avoids confrontation. In captivity, it thrives in deep, slightly moist substrate with steady warmth, high humidity, and adequate airflow—rewarding keepers with fast growth, vivid coloration, and impressive size.
